What Is Grind?
Grind started as a cafe in Shoreditch, East London, in 2011. Over the past decade it has expanded to 12 London cafes and a direct-to-consumer coffee subscription that now reaches customers across the UK. The home compostable pod range launched in 2020 and has become the brand's fastest-growing product.
Grind achieved B Corp certification in 2021 — one of the few UK coffee brands to do so. This covers their supply chain ethics, carbon footprint, and the home compostable pod innovation. For Nespresso machine owners who care about sustainability, Grind is the obvious first stop.
The Home Compostable Pod — How Does It Actually Work?
Unlike aluminium Nespresso pods (which require specialist recycling) or standard "biodegradable" pods (which often need industrial composting), Grind's pods break down in a standard home compost bin within 26 weeks.
The pod is made from plant-based material certified to TÜV Austria's OK Home Compost standard — the strictest compostable certification available. In practice: brew your coffee, tip the grounds and pod straight into your compost bin. No separation, no specialist collection needed.
Taste Test
Brewed in a Nespresso Essenza Mini at recommended settings: the Shoreditch pods produce a smooth, medium-dark espresso with notes of dark chocolate and a slight nuttiness. Crema formation is decent — not as thick as Nespresso's own pods, but adequate.
As a straight espresso: excellent. Over ice with oat milk: very good — the chocolate notes come through cleanly. Compared directly to a Nespresso Ispirazione Roma (the closest flavour profile): slightly less intense, but genuinely comparable and not a trade-down in quality.

Yes — Grind was one of the first UK coffee brands to launch genuinely home compostable Nespresso-compatible pods. The pods are certified to TÜV OK Home Compost standard, meaning they break down in a home compost heap (not just industrial composting facilities). They fit all Nespresso Original Line machines including Vertuo-adjacent brewing, though the Vertuo Line is not compatible.
How does Grind coffee taste compared to Nespresso pods?
Grind pods produce a comparable espresso to Nespresso Original Line pods — the Shoreditch and Soho blends are smooth and well-balanced. They're not quite at the flavour intensity of Nespresso's premium Ispirazione range, but for everyday drinking they're excellent and better than most third-party pods. The sustainability trade-off is worth it.
